Camping in Mt Hood for the Weekend

Aug 11-13: Standing proud and determined as seen from downtown Portland, is Mt Hood, 11,250 feet tall and Oregon’s tallest mountain.  It is part of the volcanic Cascade Range.  And the Cascades are part of what attracts many outdoorsy folks to live in Oregon.

Rafting the Deschutes

Rafting the DeschutesAug. 15: For the last few years, I have been part of an annual event with some friends rafting the Deschutes River, in Central Oregon.  What draws people there?  Its proximity to Bend, expansive high desert scenery, and dependably hot summers all make it a very appealing destination.

The Great American Eclipse

The Great American EclipseAug. 21: It seems like every few months, there is some astrological thing that is happening, that is some sort of once in a lifetime event.  Of if I live to see it twice, I was in diapers once and demented the other time.

They don’t all interest me,

Hiking Around Mt St Helens

Hiking Around Mt St HelensAug. 25: The windows from my apartment face north and, on clear days, I am graced with seeing Mt St Helens, 70 miles away.  From that distance, the mountain is not that big.  Being that it has snow on it much of the year,

The Ball Drops in Times Square and Eleven Madison

Dec. 31:  So, it’s 2017.  Pretty groovy.  And I am in New York City.  Even groovier.  And having a travel adventure with my son Woody.  Icing on the cake.  But I need to go all the way back to 2016 to do this blog post justice.

Woody and I flew from Portland to JFK five nights ago,

A Day in Lower Manhattan – Nix and the Highline

Jan. 1:  If the first day of the year is any indication, the rest of 2017 will be busy, entertaining, and open up a lot of new experiences.  I figured it would be best to hold off on tackling any New Year’s resolutions until I got back home and in the groove.

NYC — South Street Seaport and Aldea

Aug. 10:  New York City is arguably the greatest place on earth.  This assumes that you like cosmopolitan cities.  And that you also are fond of outspoken and forthright people.  And part of the reason why I am more than halfway willing to stand behind my statement that New York City is the greatest place on earth,

Le Bernardin and Central Park

Aug. 11:  Even two days in NYC is not anywhere near enough.  It’s a true statement even taking into account that I go there regularly so my accumulated NYC time is pretty substantial.  Yet NYC, like Paris, is one of those places that people, including myself, keep going back to again and again and again.

With Wallowa Llamas into Eagle Cap Wilderness

Jul. 23 and 24:  Dan and I are absorbing the clean mountain air up at 8,500 feet in the northeastern corner of Oregon.  Now that’s a long way from home, at least when using a car and not a plane to get here.  Last autumn Dan mentioned that he got an email from Raz that the 2016 Wallowa Llamas schedule was released and it was right then that we picked the dates to go on a trek into Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Exploring Pine Lakes

Jul. 25:  We are on our second and last night at Pine Lakes.  I certainly could drink in the scenery here for more days.  However, I am fully accepting of the fact that we have more magnificent places to explore.  So we are on the move.

This morning,
