Olympic Peninsula to Victoria

Sep. 2 and 3:  I am now settled into a charming loft on Yates Street in Victoria, British Columbia.  It took a lot to get here from my home in Eugene, Oregon.  Departing on Friday afternoon of Labor Day was not ideal, but it was what worked in mine and Michael’s schedule,

Victoria’s Chinatown and Biking to Oak Bay

Sep. 4:  The loft is decidedly a noisy place on a holiday weekend.  It wasn’t obvious at first, but if it wasn’t the noise carrying from the bar downstairs, it was the neighbors having a party.  And when they settled down, the seagulls starting conversing loudly.

Royal BC Museum and Downtown Victoria

Sep. 5:  We had a bit of a groggy start to the day.  I slept like a rock, but my body was running slow due to the shitty Chinese food from last night.  Michael did not sleep well, due to the party in the alley and in the apartment next door.

Parliament and Robert Bateman Center

Sep. 6 and 7:  I am back in Eugene now.  It took the better part of the day to travel from Victoria to Eugene.  But I will back track to yesterday morning.  We had a whole other fun filled day in Victoria, so let me not brush over that.

NYC — South Street Seaport and Aldea

Aug. 10:  New York City is arguably the greatest place on earth.  This assumes that you like cosmopolitan cities.  And that you also are fond of outspoken and forthright people.  And part of the reason why I am more than halfway willing to stand behind my statement that New York City is the greatest place on earth,

Le Bernardin and Central Park

Aug. 11:  Even two days in NYC is not anywhere near enough.  It’s a true statement even taking into account that I go there regularly so my accumulated NYC time is pretty substantial.  Yet NYC, like Paris, is one of those places that people, including myself, keep going back to again and again and again.

Santa Cruz to Big Sur – Jun 20

I am sitting in the light of the (almost) full moon, on the (almost) longest day of the year in Andrew Molera State Park, at the northern end of Big Sur.  Yesterday, my friend Brendan and I flew to San Jose.  We were eager to get out of the city and into some of California’s most scenic regions.

The Music — La Musica de Zihuatanejo

What can I say?  Part of what makes Latin America so charming is the way that music is infused into the culture.  Whether you are strolling down an alley, meandering on the malecón, or sitting on the beach – music is never far away

The People — La Gente de Zihuatanejo

At the end of the day, the magic of travel is about the people.  It’s arguable, since certain styles of travel are scenery and geography based – but that aside, it’s all about the people.  It’s the people who raise the food and develop the architecture and create the history that any particular region is steeped in.

Arctic Bound Alaska — Anchorage

It’s true, I am in Alaska in the middle of the winter.  What is a sun worshiper like myself doing here?  I am someone who thinks of heading to the lands where the coconuts grow when it gets yucky in Oregon.  But I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights.
