Portugal is Western Europe’s hidden little gem. It does not garner nearly as much attention as Spain, yet the climate and natural beauty are on par with Spain’s. It is a modest sized country, filled with friendly people who are very proud to share their homeland. Being surrounded by the Atlantic, the seafaring culture is tightly woven into Portugal’s fabric. Their days as conquerors and explorers during the Age of Discovery will never be forgotten. Prices are very modest by Western European standards and almost everyone speaks some English (even in the rural areas).  It is a very accessible place to travel.  If it at all calls to you, I hope you will give it a try.
